How to Take Care of Your Nervous System When Triggered (hint - it's NOT just positive self talk!)

When your nervous system is activated, the animal body is doing everything it can to keep you safe and protected - muscle tension, laser sharp focus, frenetic thoughts... it's a really hard state of being to talk yourself out of! If you want to understand how to take care of your nervous system when triggered, I find it most beneficial to do these two things BEFORE engaging with positive self talk and affirmations: 1) create space from the trigger (if possible) and 2) work with the body first. After all, how are you supposed to even gather the right words when your brain is shooting at rapid fire all the worst possible scenarios?
